Contaminated IV Fluids: Birmingham/ Shelby County Area Hospitals
Belt Law Firm is currently investigating a potential claim on behalf of a patient who became severely ill immediately after receiving recalled and possibly contaminated IV fluid during her stay at a Birmingham/ Shelby County area hospital. On March 29, 2011 the CDC announced that a Birmingham pharmacy, Meds IV, had supplied several area hospitals with IV fluids contaminated with potentially deadly bacteria. The report states that nine patients died after receiving the fluids and that nineteen patients were confirmed to have been infected.
The identified hospitals include: Shelby Baptist Medical Center, Cooper Green Mercy Hospital, Medical West, Prattville Baptist Hospital and Select Specialty Hospital at Trinity Medical Center.
According to the Birmingham News, Meds IV informed the hospitals of the problem with its product on March 15 and nine days later recalled all IV products sold since the first of the year. The specific products at issue are identified as bags of “total parenteral nutrition” or TPN which is a nutritional supplement typically administered to patients too sick to eat. We have confirmed that the fluid administered to our client was compounded during the same time period identified in the CDC’s report.
