Alabama has a statewide judicial system. State courts in Jefferson County are part of Alabama’s 10th Judicial Circuit.

The state courts in Jefferson County have jurisdiction over certain types of cases. Circuit courts are the courts where jury trials are generally held and they hear both civil and criminal matters. There is a civil division and a criminal division.

Circuit civil courts in Jefferson County have jurisdiction over civil lawsuits including more serious types of motor vehicle accidents and personal injury claims in which the amount of damages at issue is more than $10,000.

Red Mountain Park—This 1,500-acre park is located on the land that was mined extensively for iron ore by earlier generations of Birmingham workers and is being redeveloped as urban green space. Red Mountain Park includes 14 miles of trails and offers picturesque views overlooking Birmingham.

Vulcan Park—Vulcan, a giant cast iron statue symbolizing Birmingham’s history of iron and steel production, has overlooked Birmingham from Red Mountain since the 1930s.

Five Points South—Birmingham’s first street car suburb, this trendy area is popular today for its historic houses and buildings, dozens of restaurants, shopping and entertainment.
