Birmingham Traumatic Brain Injury Lawyers
Head and brain injuries are among the most traumatic and life-altering injuries a person can suffer. They can reduce one’s ability to enjoy or participate in many aspects of life.
A jolt or blow to the head, like what may happen in an automobile accident, can cause the brain to move with such force that it bruises when it comes in contact with the skull. The resulting concussion, post-concussion syndrome (PCS), or traumatic brain injury (TBI) may leave the individual dazed or temporarily unconscious, or it can cause more extensive physical damages that result in long-term complications or death.

Common Types of Head and Brain Injuries
Head and brain trauma can include a range of damage to the brain. The trauma generally results from a blow or jolt that makes the brain slam into the skull. The effect can be minor and temporary. It can also be major and long-lasting. Severe head and brain trauma can reduce the victim’s quality of life forever. Common head and brain injuries are:
- Concussion. This is a temporary injury that results from a less-severe blow to the head. The victim may lose consciousness. The symptoms may include headaches and problems with concentration, memory, judgment, balance and coordination. Doctors usually prescribe rest and monitoring to ensure the injury is not worse than thought. The patient usually fully recovers.
- Traumatic Brain Injury. Any injury results from trauma. So, any brain injury is, technically, a traumatic brain injury, or TBI. But normally, TBI describes a severe injury that causes bruising, torn tissues, bleeding and other physical damage to the brain. Mild TBI may cause what the Mayo Clinic calls “temporary dysfunction of brain cells.” Severe TBI can lead to nerve damage, cognitive damage (memory, learning, judgment, etc.), communication problems, behavioral and emotional changes (including depression, mood swings, outbursts and social difficulties), sensory problems, coma and degenerative brain disease. It may even lead to death.
- Post-concussion syndrome. The symptoms of post-concussion syndrome (PCS) are like those of a concussion. However, they can persist for a few months or a year or more and lead to anxiety and depression.
How Head and Brain Injuries Happen
The brain is a fragile organ. Any shock or trauma the brain suffers can result in some level of injury, ranging from headaches to diminished function that lasts from a moment to a lifetime.
Some traumatic brain injuries occur in car crashes. An individual can bang their head, or the head can be suddenly jerked upon impact. “Shaken baby syndrome” is a kind of TBI. Many people have suffered long-term injuries when banging their head in a simple slip-and-fall accident. Falling objects, such as from a shelf in a store or from a higher level at a construction site, may hit people on the head and cause concussions or more severe TBIs. Sports injuries lead to many cases of concussion and TBI.
Head and brain injuries can result in expensive medical needs. People with moderate TBI and PCS often require medication and therapy. Those with more severe TBI may need personal assistive devices, adaptations for their homes, in-home care and ongoing medication and physical therapy.
